SANTA FE, N.M. (July 23, 2013) — This summer, New Mexico is inviting visitors to experience authentic adventure through a different lens with the help of www.newmexico.org/filmtrails, a new travel planning resource created by the state’s tourism department. Using special itineraries, film history and lore, travelers can plan trips based on popular movies and TV series shot in New Mexico. The most recent of these, Disney’s “The Lone Ranger,” features scenes filmed in various locations across the state.

“With its breathtaking backdrops carved out by nature and history, temperate climate and unique blend of cultures, New Mexico has always been a natural filming location,” New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez said. “Now, we’re thrilled to share these views with the millions of filmgoers who will see Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’ this summer."

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger” is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice – taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Filmmakers chose New Mexico's Rio Puerco as an authentic setting for their own version of a Wild West town and shot the movie's thrilling train sequence in Cimarron Canyon near Angel Fire, N.M. To guide visitors to these locations and others, the New Mexico Tourism Department created the New Mexico Film Trails site.

"'The Lone Ranger' is one of the most buzzed about blockbusters of the summer, and it happens to coincide with a growing consumer interest in film-related tourism," said Monique Jacobson, New Mexico's secretary of tourism. "This summer and beyond, visitors to our state will discover many ways to experience the flavor of the Wild West and of 'The Lone Ranger' itself."

“The Lone Ranger” also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.
