Scientist David Schmidt invented a pop can-size oxygen generator that could be used by firefighters and also submariners. The device generated 4 hours of oxygen. He was involved in making the oxygen generator, when he was asked by the Navy to help develop a mini-sub that would increase the survivability of its Navy Seal crew members. Although because of delays, he wasn't able to join the team, it got him thinking. The Navy frowned upon the use of stimulants, like energy drinks or pep pills, but needed something small, compact and light.

"The thought occurred to me that we have wireless communication today in the form of cell phones and satellite TV; why not have a way to wirelessly communicate with the human body. A device that could 'talk' to the body to ask the body to do different things."

In the 1980s, Dr. John Zimmerman discovered the human body emits pulsating magnetic fields. Electrons flow through our bodies constantly. For example, nerve impulses travel from the brain to the muscles in our bodies. The pulsating magnetic fields, like radio waves, are a high frequency carrier wave that can carry encoded information to the body. The DNA is able to send and receive messages using an electronic process. 

LifeWave patches were developed using these principles. Schmidt invented a method that programmed organic structures the same way that computer chips are programmed. He started with ordinary materials like amino acids and specific sugars and put them into water-based solutions. (He only used materials that the FDA lists as safe.) He processed these materials in a very special way so that they are capable of "talking" to the human body.
